In 2010, I was in Austin, TX. I had recently broken up from an eleven year relationship the year prior. As with most single persons at that time, I had an account on an online dating website. This dating site had the option of “winking” or “smiling” at someone you are interested in. One day I recieved a “wink” from someone in Kentucky. My first thought was, “Kentucky??”. Never thinking in my wildest dreams I would ever consider dating someone outside of Austin…. much less out of Texas…. But I checked out her profile and sent back a canned msg “Hi, you’re cute!”. And the rest is herstory… We quickly formed a friendship that in short order formed into a romance. A romance that would lead me to move from Austin to a state that I wasn’t even sure geographically where it was. (yeah I know… didn’t pay attention in social studies that day)
When I moved to Kentucky, I wanted to form a group of friends that were not solely tied to Sheri. Since I would be new to the area, I wanted to make my own friends. This is why 3 days after I moved to Kentucky (after Sheri left me alone in a new town due to her being gone on a business trip) I formed the Lexington Lesbian Coffee House. I emulated the idea from a similar group I had belonged to in Austin, called the Austin Lesbian Coffee House. So with an idea to form a group in Lexington, I began looking for ways to meet other Lesbians in town. Since I didn’t know anyone other than Sheri’s friends, I took to a rather strange way of finding them…. I went back on the dating sites and sent messages to single women around town and invited them to join the group. My partner, Sheri, at the time was not too sure about my methods but quickly acquiesced when slowly but surely I began to make connections with women. We had our first “meetup” at a local park to listen to Jazz music. Six years later we have over 600 members and have had over 400 meetups. Most of our core group of friends that we hang out with on a regular basis came from this group of women that we met through this group. I am very grateful to this group and blessed with having to met so many women who shape my lives in many ways every day.
If you would like to get more info about our events, join our group at lexingtonlesbians.com (which is our meetup website) or head over to our public facebook page. We also have a private facebook group that we have private discussions.
